Despite the Custom name, the Flying V is the opposite of the camber version in character. The rocker-dominant profile buys powder float and easy buttering at the cost of edge hold.

It's a loose, fun board in soft snow, but its character changes abruptly as the snow firms up — the edge washes and it wobbles at speed. It suits beginners and intermediates who mainly ride soft snow and prioritise playfulness; if you want carving or high-speed stability, look at the camber version.

Board profile

The profile describes the curve of the board when viewed from the side.

Hybrid rocker

Burton Flying V — a rocker-dominant hybrid with rocker between the feet and camber under each foot and toward the tip and tail. Even within the same Custom family, its character is the opposite of the camber version: it gives up edge hold in exchange for float and easy buttering. A near-twin shape with 12.5mm setback.

How stiff is it?Closer to 10 means stiffer. It does not mean better performance.

5/10

A medium flex. The rocker sections keep things loose underfoot, butters work well and ollie pop stays alive. On firm snow, though, that suppleness translates straight into instability.

High forgiveness makes it good for progression and comfortable on soft snow. Conversely, the edge doesn't hold on hardpack or ice and speed wobble appears at pace, so it can actually be dangerous for advanced riders who push to the limit.

What the review liked

  • ✓The rocker gives it good powder float and makes butters and presses very easy
  • ✓Excellent shock absorption on choppy snow (variable snow 4/5)
  • ✓High forgiveness suits beginners and intermediates building confidence
  • ✓Enough pop for ollies and tricks

What the review found lacking

  • —Markedly insufficient edge hold on hardpack and ice — this board's decisive weakness
  • —Speed wobble develops at speed, reducing stability
  • —Carving 2/5 and pipe 2/5 mean it isn't suited to precise edge work
